A Turkish court was officially placed Istanbul Mayor Akram Imamoglu Mass protests in the country were arrested in prison on charges of corruption.

The court decided to send Imamoglu to prison on Sunday, politicized his actions against him after the main opposition party, European leaders and tens of thousands of protesters.

The court said that Imamoglu and at least 20 people were arrested as part of a corruption investigation. A separate decision has not been given in the investigation.

A long-standing opposition and potential opponent, Mayor Recep Tayyip Erdogan, was arrested on Wednesday by the government’s corruption and terrorism. Imamoglu denied all the charges.

The decision also comes as the Turkish Opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) members and others led the polling stations for the initial election confirmation Imamoglu as a candidate for the next presidential election.

CHP called on the non-party members to vote to increase public resistance after the arrest of Imamoglu.

The CHP, which has more than 1.5 million members, set up a 5,600 ballot box to vote for all 81 provinces. The questionnaires will be closed in 1400 GMT.

The next election is planned to be held in 2028.
