In 2010, Bert Mueller’s family with a home-owning family in 2010 for a family of a house in 2010 for part of his study abroad remained with a family. Mueller and some classmates studying abroad brought families from their countries from their countries.
“They did not like it very much,” Mueller said that about the food brought from the United States. But he saw that another classmate was the exact opposite experience.
“One of my friends is the Mexican origin and he would make chips and salsa and beans and corts.” “One day I came to his house and saw this dish and food for his family.”
Mueller did not really think of a job – William & Mary’s college was music and state policy – but never seen a family without a Mexican cuisine, so much thought.
“Something in my head has been clicking that maybe I could have something I can do – I was able to bring Mexican cuisine to India.”
After graduation, 22 then Mueller returned to India to open California Burrito, which is fast randomly southern California-style Burrito restaurant.
Today, 12 years after the first brick-mortar opened, there are 103 seats across the country.
Mueller instructs the decision to study abroad in India.
“I wanted to go to a different place from the United States, and therefore said that India is the place to be given, and for I first love the Indian food and the second.
Some of the classmates found cultural differences, Mueller was developed.
“Nothing can be predicted.” “Every day is different and therefore finding monotony boring, comfort is the perfect place to be in India if you find comfort.”

After graduating in 2011, he decided to execute vision during the Andograph and start the Mexican restaurant in India.
Mueller and enterprises partners have left the company since today, and the two childhood friends who return to the United States have chose Bangalore, the fourth largest city in the country. To be this center, many residents have been going to the United States and are likely to have tried a Mexican or Mexican’s neighbor.
Mueller estimated that it would be worth $ 100,000 to open his first store, so he says friends and family 250,000 dollars. “
According to the documents investigated by CNBC, the first place in the first year earned about $ 500,000. And in financing, the original 250,000 dollars ended to be enough for Mueller to open two more stores.
Since 2012, Mueller continued to open places in Chennai, Hyderabad and Delhi. In 2024, California Burrito brought $ 23 million income.
The successes of the brand came despite some unique difficulties.
“The biggest difficulty said that the person we hire at the beginning to help us and help us,” he said.
He hired an area manager working in other chain restaurants.
“He was very well educated,” he says. “He spoke in great English, so it was easy to communicate with him. He walked us to find the sellers. He would recommend the sellers.
Mueller, the person he hired, known that the supplier had doubled the price of suppliers and has plans to repeat California Burrito.
“He will call the government officials to the store and say,” We did not make X, Y and Z, “he said. “He collided with the sellers. Then then he went and started his own Burrito restaurant who failed.”
The gelback did not prevent it from the preparation of California Burrito as successfully as possible.
“My mother is a marathon run and I have this sign,” he says. “You had to continue until you reach the finish line. I never feel off work.”
Mueller’s original plan was to stay in India for only five years. However, after five years, the company realized that it would be better.
Now the California Burrito sources from five different chicken suppliers and some have been planted in 500 avocado trees, tapped by elephants. The company grew in Tomatillos in Karnataka, but “a large amount of rain came and wiped them all.”
More investment in the supply chain farmers says “to think in decades.”
Now it is uncertain for staying in India: “I don’t have a planned output history in my mind. I love India.
