The first vote of Ahkinka – a secret process to choose a new Pope – could not decide.

After a long wait, the black smoke consisted of the Sistine Chapel chimney at 9:00 p.m. – 133 cardinals mean they could not choose a new Pope.

Tens of thousands of tens of thousands of tens of thousands of bulk gathered for the first vote of the crowd – the results took more than two hours.

Cardinals will return to a closed Sistine Chapel for more voting tomorrow.

BBC’s Laura Gozzi was in the Vatican city next to the waiting crowd.

It is drawn by John Johnson
