The Internet Archive modernizes its GeoCities GIF search engine

The Internet archive has made it easy to search for GIFS for years ’90. Opinion Flanel T-Shirts and Soup Nazis consists of ten years million animations. GIFs have been drawn from older geocities websites, which (mostly) dust in 2009.

The new version of Gifcities is easier to search. Now you can search semantically according to the animation content. In other words, it is more to educate the theme or scene you are looking for by describing it. The old version of Gifcities, you can only search for the file name. (If you feel masochistic, you can still access that version in the “Special Search” tab.)

Updated gifcities also use pagination now. The endless slip of the old version is a good thing to do for slow scanning. You can also create and share “gifgrams”. As the name suggests, these are special electronic congratulations made of these ancient gifs.

Internet archive Launched Gifcities in 2016 To celebrate the 20th anniversary. If you are too young to know, Geocities was a quintessential early internet web hosting service. A prevsor of social media, these embarrassed fan pages, personal photo albums and “built-in” gifs. (You can find many of the last in this search engine.) Yahoo, in 2009, took the plug in most of the majority of GeoCies. (Disclosure: This Engadget has a mother company.) However, the Japanese version survived for another ten years.

If you have a certain age, you will probably enjoy Walking the archive. (Or learn what’s going on for the internet humor before you are born!) Just remember that many results are NSFW. I did the mistake of looking for “Mr. T” and now I will give you my eyes with bleaching.
